The initial uses that started the popularity of the first spreadsheets, Visicalc and Lotus 123, were accounting and cash flow calculations.
While the uses of spreadsheets have gone in many directions, this heritage still shows, and these tools are very good for such purposes.
They are however not always good for other uses.
